E40 porcelain light bulb sockets are meant to use with Edison screw bulbs. The power of these bulbs can reach to 2000 Watts, thus the porcelain sockets can withstand considerably higher operating temperatures than their bakelite counterparts. The E40 sockets are larger than the E27 porcelain sockets and mainly used with the metal halides lamps and high pressure sodium bulbs.
